Sister José Women's Center
Tucson, AZ
Our low-barrier day center provides unaccompanied women who are unhoused with a stable and safe environment to recuperate from the daily struggle of homelessness and extreme poverty. Sister José’s is dedicated to creating a sustainable future for our guests by providing life-changing support and resources to begin their transition out of housing insecurity. For many of our guests, we are their only safe haven and the first step to recovery.
Gateway Drop-In Program:
This program is the gateway program to Sister José’s other programs and services. It provides for the survival needs of unsheltered guests, their companion pets, and those who are precariously housed and may not have enough income for laundry, clothing, or meals throughout the month.
- Breakfast and lunch to-go
- Shower and hygiene products
- Emergency clothing
- Laundry
- Mail delivery, cell phone charging stations, Wi-Fi and computer access
- Case navigator support for photo IDs, birth certificates, crisis management, referral to on-site providers, resources and housing support
- On-site providers for healthcare and housing that engage with guests while they meet their survival needs
Gateway Shelter Program:
Sister José’s shelter provides emergency shelter and long-term shelter year-round. Guests have 24-hour access to their space and belongings. Those with companion pets sleep side-by-side with them in their bed space. Emphasis is placed on filling all fifty-four beds every night.
Impact Project:
The project identifies guests who face multiple challenges and obstacles to building health and housing stability. They are eligible for an extended shelter stay and additional supportive services to overcome their challenges and expedite their engagement with health and housing providers.
Sister Jose’s Afternoon Cooling/Warming Center:
To meet the needs of unsheltered guests during seasons with extreme weather, the center offers a quiet space to rest in the afternoon. This program averages 500 visits monthly during extreme weather months.
